Filters

TYPES OF FILTER

When selecting a filter as part of your pool equipment, you are looking at an item that can be expected to last in excess of ten years, so that the cost should only be a minor consideration at best.

The different filter types have different efficiencies.

Diatomaceous Earth

These filters are the most efficient and the most expensive. They require more work than a Sand Filter but not as much as a Cartridge Filter. They have the advantage of being able to filter out algae, which sand filters struggle to do. We have had numerous reports from people who have these filters, that they only run their filtration for 2 or 3 hours a day (during periods of no usage and the cooler months) without any problems. You may consider this a useful item to add to your pool equipment wish list.

Cluster Cartridge Filter

These filters are very efficient. These filters can be operated for months without requiring cleaning which is a big advantage when water usage is an issue. When the time does come to cleaning them (as indicated by the pressure gauge) it can take quite a while and of course they can be cleaned elsewhere. Be sure to install a waste line with these filters.

Cartridge Filter

These filters are more efficient than sand filters however they can be labour intensive as they may require weekly cleaning. They are ideal where space is limited but be sure to plumb in a waste line if installing from scratch. It is difficult to drop the water level or clean up a green pool without a waste line. It is better not to use granular chlorine if you install one of these filters as any calcium by-product will choke the filter.

Sand Filter

These filters are the most popular due to their ease of use. They are, however the least efficient, especially if the pump has been oversized. The choice of filtration medium (sand or glass) will also affect the filtration efficiency of a sand filter. A knowledge of the pool’s hydraulics is important when selecting a pump to go with a pool filter.

FILTER SELECTION

When choosing pool equipment, filter selection is the first decision, and we need to consider the

  • pool volume
  • pool surface area
  • expected bather load (during peak usage)
  • expected debris load (at the worst time of the year)
  • calculated turnover requirement of the pool water
  • desired running times
  • size and layout of the pool plumbing (when replacing a filter)
  • available space for the filter to sit.

OUR PREFERRED FILTER RANGE

Sand Filters

Powerline Sand Filter

The Powerline Top Mount Sand Filters offer the lastest in pool technology with smooth, efficient flow and totally balanced backwashing. For crystal clear sparkling water with minimum care, these Powerline Sand Filters set a new standard for value.

ProSeries™ Sand Filters

ProSeries™ high-rate sand filters are high performance, totally corrosion-proof, unitized tank constructed filters that blend superior flow characteristics and features with ease of operation.

A few of the many sand filter installs

“We, at Adlers have installed hundreds of these filters over the years. We have found them to be extremely reliable. There was a period back several years ago when the barrel unions were failing but that problem was solved ages ago. We had a warranty replacement of a split tank recently, but that will happen if you don’t backwash for months (and possibly years) on end. You will also damage any Multiport Valve if you change settings while the system is running. Maintenance consists of greasing the o-rings and gaskets in the valve at the beginning of each season; a sand change is best done every 5 or 6 years; and, the spider gasket many need replacing after several years and this requirement is indicated by water going down the waste line during filtration. Do these minor things and you filter will last for many years. We have seen them operating well past 15 years.”

ProSeries™ Plus Sand Filters

ProSeries™ Plus incorporates the many features of ProSeries Plus satisfies the requirements of the most demanding installations.

This install is an example of “demanding Installation”.

“A narrow passage where it would have been extremely difficult to get to a top mounted sand filter due to the plumbing that was dictated by the position of the pipes from the pool. The position of the side mounted valve allows for easy back-washing.”

Cartridge Filters

SwimClear Single Element Cartridge Filter

for both new pool and aftermarket installations SwimClear™ single element cartridge filters are the industry’s most efficient and easiest to service single element cartridge filters, providing best-in-class filtration performance.

A few of our installs

“These filters are a recent addition to the Hayward stable. The design has been very well thought out, which is typical of Hayward.”

SwimClear™ Cartridge Filters

Utilising a cluster of four reusable cartridge elements, SwimClear™ filters offer a choice of 325 or 525 square feet of heavy-duty dirt holding capacity for extra-long filter cycles, up to an entire season without cleaning.

One of our installs

“One of the several installs we, at Adlers, did during the drought when the dams were dangerously low. These are the top of the range cartridge filters which can be run for months before needing to be cleaned”.

StarClear™ Plus Cartridge Filters

StarClear™ Plus cartridge filters deliver added quality, value and convenience.

A few of our installs

“We like these because they can easily replace existing cylinder cartridge filters of all makes. They don’t have a strapping band and are closed via a locking nut on the top. You do need to take the lid length into account when considering one of these filters, especially if installing under decking. Again we, at Adlers have installed quite a lot of these filters.”

StarClear™ Cartridge Filters

Hayward Star-Clear™ cartridge filters provide crystal clear water and have extra cleaning capacity to accommodate pools and spas of all types and sizes.

DE Filters

ProGrid™ Vertical Grid D.E. Filter

ProGrid™ vertical grid D.E. filters provide superior water clarity, efficient flow and large cleaning capacity for pools and of all types and sizes.

One of our installs

If you want the best possible filtration you can get for a domestic pool this is our choice of filter at Adlers. If I was building a pool (for me) this would be my choice of filter. Because of the cost and the care needed we have not installed very many of these filters. If you can afford one of these, then you can afford to pay someone else to service the unit.”

Replacement Filter Elements

Hayward reusable cartridge filter elements are made of a superior reinforced polyester material.
